Media Release - 22nd June 2010
The Joanna Briggs Foundation was officially launched at Admiralty House, Kirribilly, Sydney, Australia, on Monday night by its Patron the Governor General of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce AM.
The launch was attended by a prestigious and exclusive guest list, including His Excellency Mr Michael Bryce, Dr Christopher James Lukabyo (High Commissioner for the Republic of Uganda), His Excellency Stuparu Mihi Stefan (the Ambassador of Romania), His Excellency Shope Lenin Magigwane (the High Commissioner for the Republic of South Africa), His Excellency Ernesto H. De Leon (the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines) as well as members of the Foundation Advisory Board and the Joanna Briggs Institute Committee of Management.
Ms Bryce opened proceedings, followed by speeches from the Director of the Foundation, Emeritus Professor Judy Lumby and the Chair of the Foundation Advisory Board, Professor Alison Kitson.
The Governor General spoke of being "in awe of the scientists and clinicians" at the frontier of medical science.
"And I'm convinced of the central and vital place they have in Australia, and in countries and communities throughout the world. The knowledge that these talented and skilled individuals discover, generate and distill for us is critical to the future health and wellbeing of our society and our planet."
"Knowledge is hot property, and getting hotter", she said.
She went on to recall an analogy made by Sir Muir Gray some years ago of knowledge being like water. Just as we require clean clear water for good health, so too do patients and professionals need clean, clear knowledge to inform their decisions.
It is hoped that the Foundation will be able to raise funds to support the development and distribution of important knowledge to improve health care delivery in the developing world.
Formal proceedings were followed by drinks and canapes as guests enjoyed a unique opportunity to network and experience beautiful views of the harbour, opera house and bridge from this historic location.
